"Based on a True Story": Claiming Truth in Fiction Film

The academic journal 'New Readings' is inviting proposals for contributions to a themed issue exploring claims to truth and authenticity in fiction film (on both the paratextual and the textual level). We particularly welcome essays on specific aspects and the implications of cinematic truth claims, as well as on wider theoretical issues or on groups of films, although individual case studies will also be considered for publication.

Topics could include, but are not limited to:

- Historical and cultural variations of film credits making truth claims

- Truth claims and historiography

- Unreliable narration

- Ironic truth claims

- Truth theory

- Speech act theory

- Censorship

- Legal implications and practices

- Effects on the audience

Proposals (up to 300 words in length) should be submitted by 31 August 2010 to the General Editors (see below). Contributors will be notified of acceptance of their proposal by 1 November. Accepted contributions should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words (including footnotes and works cited), and must be submitted by 31 March 2011. Please send proposals and submissions as e-mail attachments in one of the following formats: Rich Text Format (.rtf) or Microsoft Word (.doc / .docx). New Readings welcomes proposals and submissions in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. Guidelines regarding formatting of contributions will be provided along with notifications of acceptance.

At the same time, 'New Readings' is inviting contributions to its general issues (no specific deadline). For submission details please refer to the journal's website or contact the General Editors:

About New Readings

'New Readings' is a peer-reviewed, open-access online-journal. We publish original research in the fields of literature, film and visual culture. The journal has a strong, but by no means exclusive interest in interdisciplinary scholarship. Established in 1995 to publish selected research papers presented by scholars visiting Cardiff University (Wales, UK), in 2000 the journal moved online for increased circulation.

'New Readings' has recently been relaunched and will publish two issues per year, one general and one themed. Previous themed issues have been 'Images of Exile', 'Figures of the Self', 'Identity, Gender, Politics', 'Space and Identity', 'Travelling the Urban Space', 'Writing Difference' and 'Alternative Voices in European Cinema'.
