Adaptation

Adaptation is a key notion in the history of French and Francophone
culture and language. It is central to the construction and contestation
of identity, and the survival, endurance - but also the disappearance - of
linguistic and cultural forms. It is a running thread through the varied
eras of French and Francophone history, functioning throughout as the
means through which individuals or cultures relate to, deal with or often
resist more dominant or opposing forms. This conference will therefore
consider the process of adaptation both as cultural practice and in its
more Darwinian conception, and will look for contributions from all areas
of French and Francophone studies.
Topics might include, though are not limited to: transculturation,
acculturation, multiculturalism, and their reflection on theory and the
arts; 'migrant' texts and their interpretation or translation; the
evolution of the French language, its cultural uses and practices,
encompassing aspects such as the language of literature, visual media, and
popular music; the status of visual culture, in particular cinema,
internationally; the practices of French-language literature in
translation, and translation into French; approaches to film subtitling
and international marketing; practices of the body in visual and
performing arts; the movement of texts, narratives and images across
different arts; issues of hierarchy in the arts and cultural shifts.
Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted in English or in
French, along with your name, email address, and university affiliation.
You should also indicate on your proposal any audiovisual requirements you

L’adaptation est une notion clé dans l’histoire de la langue et de la
culture françaises et francophones. Elle joue un rôle essentiel dans la
construction et la contestation de l’identité, ainsi que dans la survie –
mais aussi la disparition – des formes linguistiques et culturelles. Elle
relie les différentes époques de l’histoire française et francophone et
est le moyen grâce auquel les individus ou les cultures se rapportent aux
formes dominantes ou oppressives, leur font face ou, souvent, s’y
opposent. Cette conférence examinera le processus d’adaptation en tant que
pratique culturelle, tout en s’intéressant également à sa conception plus
Darwinienne, et accueillera des contributions dans tous les domaines des
études françaises et francophones.
Liste thématique non-exhaustive: la transculturation, l’acculturation, le
multiculturalisme, et leur manifestation dans la théorie et les arts; les
textes 'itinérants', et leur interprétation ou leur traduction;
l'évolution de la langue française, ses usages et ses pratiques
culturelles dans des domaines tels que la littérature, les médias, et la
musique populaire, par exemple; le statut de la culture visuelle
française, et surtout le cinéma, au niveau international; les pratiques de
traduction littéraire du français et en français; les approches au sous-
titrage et à la commercialisation internationale du cinéma; les pratiques
du corps dans les arts visuels, le théâtre, ou la danse; le mouvement de
textes, d'histoires et d'images à travers différents arts; les questions
de hiérarchie et de changements culturels dans les arts.
Les propositions de communications, en anglais ou en français (250
mots) doivent être envoyées en pièce jointe et au format Microsoft Word ou
