100 years after its inception in 1910, the so-called Mexican Revolution has been consigned to history. Or has it? In fact, the bloody civil war continues to be a key element in official rhetoric regarding the origin and identity of contemporary Mexico. Its appropriation in Mexican culture continues to shift across time and across different sectors of society. To this day, literature and film outside Mexico have also drawn on the Mexican Revolution from diverse perspectives and with varying agendas.
We invite proposals for papers on the representation of the Mexican Revolution in literature, film, art and popular culture. While we welcome new readings of canonical texts, of particular interest will be papers exploring less studied and more recent materials.
Besides works from the traditional literary, filmic and artistic genres, materials considered could include graphic novels, comic strips, soap operas, photography, popular music, posters, illustrations and graffiti.
Papers may be presented in English or Spanish. The organisers will make arrangements for a selection of papers to be published as an edited volume or themed journal issue by the end of 2012.
Please send proposals of 250 words by 31 January 2010 to MexRev2010@cardiff.ac.uk. Proposals should include the title of the paper, along with the speaker's name, academic title and institutional affiliation. Please submit proposals as attachments in Rich Text Format (*.rtf).
