Kala Pani Discursivity:

Framing Indo-Caribbean-ness in a Comparative Francophone / Anglophone Context

Public Lecture by Prof. Brinda Mehta (Mills College, California)

5th December 2012, 18:30 – 20:00, University of Heidelberg

This presentation focuses on the framing of Indo-Caribbean identity in a trans-Caribbean Francophone and Anglophone context. It examines some of the key questions related to the very "idea" of Indian-ness and the Indo-Caribbean presence, such as the historicity of the Atlantic crossings or kala pani, revised notions of creolization that are more inclusive of "othered" ethnicities, and the trauma of assimilation as a minority culture. The presentation will also engage in “transoceanic" dialogues with other framings of Indian identity in a transnational context to propose a more synchronic reading of indianité across and beyond the Caribbean diasporas of indenture. The primary focus will be on Indo-Caribbean literature. Major writers discussed include V.S. Naipaul, Ramabai Espinet, Khal Torabully, and Laure Moutoussamy.
