Meeting Description:
It is a well known fact that Italians were the largest group of immigrants to Argentina in the late 19th century. One positive side effect of this mass immigration was the creating of an urban music culture in Buenos Aires ranging from popular music and dance music, to opera and classical music. The Colon Theater, the main opera
house of Buenos Aires was the gateway for many Italian musicians who, in order to make a living, later relocated to various cities across the continent and contributed to the creating of music culture in other South American urban areas (Santiago de Chile, Lima, etc.). In addition, when Buenos Aires became the center of the South American record industry from 1913 on, Italian Opera was among the most produced items. As far as tango is concerned, a considerable number of the early composers and musicians had Italian roots. The talian contribution to the local music culture is also reflected in the popular theatre (sainete) where the Italian immigrant from Naples is often stereotyped as an opera singer, guitar or mandolin player, or music or singing teacher. Encompassed by a growing variety and complexity of media and culture exchange, Italian influence on South American music culture remained strong throughout 20th century.
